SERVETTE FCCF – GC WOMEN’S FOOTBALL 1-1 (1-0 / PENALTY SHOOTOUT 0-3)

Defeated on penalties by Grasshopper Club (GC), the Garnets will not reach the playoff semi-finals and say goodbye to the title race.

A cruel disappointment, immense pain. The Servette players will not retain their Swiss Championship title won last year after their quarter-final elimination against Grasshopper.

The team coached by José Barcala started the first half with great determination. Defensively solid, they lacked a bit of precision in the final meters to create a clear chance to lead at halftime. Apart from one opportunity for El Ghazouani, the referee ended a first half that was somewhat dull in chances and spectacle.

After the break, Servette FCCF pushed forward and finally created more dangerous opportunities. The opening goal came from the fantastic left foot of Marchão, who left the Zurich goalkeeper with no chance. Just when it seemed the Servettiennes were going to celebrate a semi-final qualification, salvation for the “Sauterelles” (Grasshopper nickname) came from Pfister’s header in the final moments of the match—likely the best chance of the entire game for Grasshopper. A cruel twist of fate.

During extra time, the Servette players pushed hard and even played 11 vs 10 after a Zurich player was sent off for a nasty foul on Marchão, who was then forced off injured. But nothing changed—GC held on, and the penalty shootout would decide this quarter-final.

The penalty shootout was a nightmare for the Garnets. Clémaron and Lázaro saw their shots saved by the opposing goalkeeper, and Korhonen missed the target. Zurich did not miss any of their attempts and the “Sauterelles” advanced to the semi-finals.

After a record-breaking 2023/24 season with a historic double, the 2024/25 season ends abruptly and painfully for Servette FCCF.

The Servettiennes will still play a two-legged match this season for the final 5th/6th place in the league.
